BIOGRAPHY:
Casey Affleck is a popular actor, producer and director whose career first developed in the shadow of his older brother’s fame. The artist managed to change the public’s attitude towards himself thanks to his charisma and talent. Casey’s voice still reminds many today of Marlon Brando’s speech. Nevertheless, the star is reluctant to leave the “ghetto of film festivals” – auteur cinema is closer to his spirit than the mainstream, and he remains true to himself.
Childhood and youth:
Casey Affleck was born in August 1975 in Falmouth, Massachusetts. Has Scottish, English and Swiss roots. Casey is the youngest of the children in the family; he has a famous brother, Ben Affleck.
Casey and Ben’s childhood was spent in a tense environment – their father changed one job for another and tormented the family with a craving for alcohol. The mother, a primary school teacher with a Harvard diploma, could not tolerate her husband’s alcohol addiction and filed for divorce.
After the dissolution of their parents’ union, nine-year-old Casey and his older brother Ben were raised by their mother in Cambridge. Subsequently, their father stopped drinking and began to professionally help other people overcome addiction. This transformation impressed Casey so much that in his teens he reconnected with his father and has maintained contact for many years since then.
The main role in the formation of the brothers was played by their mother, who instilled in both Afflecks a passion for acting and, in general, for creativity in all its diversity of manifestations. She took them to theaters, inspired them to create home videos, and representatives of the creative intelligentsia regularly gathered at their house in Cambridge.
Casey and Ben’s mother’s friendship with a local casting director contributed to the children’s first job offers, be it acting in commercials, a cameo role in a TV series, or being an extra during filming.
As a high school student, Casey took classes at an acting school and participated in numerous theater productions. It was then, by his own admission, that he felt how exciting and stimulating the work of an actor could be, and how much he liked it. The young man decided that he was ready to devote his whole life to acting.
At the age of 18, with the desire to start a professional career as an actor, Casey moved to Los Angeles, where he rented an apartment with his brother Ben and their mutual friend Matt Damon in order to conquer Hollywood.
Movies:
Affleck’s thorny career path began with participation in extras and minor roles. At the age of 20, Casey received an offer from director Gus Van Sant to star in a supporting role in his film To Die For. This was an important role for the young performer, but even after it there was no breakthrough in his career.
At one point, he even abandoned the idea of getting into feature films and instead went to get a higher education – first in Washington, and then in New York. At Columbia University he focused on studying physics. For two years he “gnawed at the granite of science” and lived in Manhattan with his grandmother.
However, the guy never received a diploma – tempting job invitations began to appear, which the artist could not refuse.
One of these offers was a minor role in the film “Good Will Hunting,” the script for which was written by his brother and Matt Damon. The film became iconic for their generation and entered the list of must-see films, and the Affleck brothers went on different career paths. While Ben became a star and starred mainly in blockbusters, Casey chose the path of independent cinema and arthouse.
Popular projects also appeared in the actor’s repertoire. In 1999, the comedy film American Pie was released and received international recognition. In the box-office film, Casey played only a cameo role as the hero Tom Myers. In the same year, viewers appreciated Affleck’s acting in the comedy “200 Cigarettes” about a New Year’s youth party. The film stars both brothers, as well as Kate Hudson, Courtney Love and Christina Ricci.
In the biography of this period, both frankly failed projects and those that brought the actor income and popularity appear. For example, he managed to get into the cast of Steven Soderbergh’s series of films about the adventurous Ocean’s friends, which starred Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and George Clooney. The roles were not of the first plan, but rather episodic, but they served the actor well.
Casey’s breakthrough was the next turn in his career. At first, his older brother decided to develop himself as a director and called him for the main role in his film Gone Baby Gone (2007), in which the younger Affleck appeared before the audience in the image of a private detective. The film was warmly received by film critics; it was repeatedly nominated for the international awards “Golden Globe”, “Oscar”, “Saturn” and others.
Then, in the same year, the second film starring Casey was released – based on the novel, How the Coward Robert Ford Killed Jesse James, in which Brad Pitt also starred. The film received numerous positive reviews, and the image of the young rebel, cowardly and rushing about, impressed both viewers and film critics. For recreating the image of Robert Ford, Casey received his first Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.
After such a successful performance as an actor, Casey chose the path of director and cameraman. He poured all his energy and resources into the film I’m Still Here (2010), starring friend and in-law Joaquin Phoenix. Despite the efforts and work, the film was coolly received by viewers and film critics.
The period since 2013 became the time for Casey to enter the forefront of Hollywood. In 2013, two projects with his participation appeared at the box office: the thriller “From the Furnace” and the melodrama “On the Run.”
Later, the science fiction film Interstellar, directed by Christopher Nolan, took the screens by storm, where Casey Affleck had a starring role. American physicist Kip Thorne was brought in to work on the idea for the film. At his suggestion, the plot used only studied physical laws and officially existing alternative theories.
Casey does not like to watch films with his participation, and “Interstellar” was no exception, despite the actor’s love for the work of Christopher Nolan. According to Affleck, a minute spent on the set where this genius creates should cost everyone $1 million.
In 2016, 3 projects appeared in the artist’s filmography, different in genre, in each of which Casey played the main role and showed the facets of his incredible talent. Among these films is the poignant drama Manchester by the Sea, which was shortlisted for Oscar as best film. The artist himself received a statuette for the best male role in this project.
For his performance in “Manchester by the Sea” and for the totality of various projects, Casey became a Hollywood hero at the end of the year. Therefore, his appearance on the cover of a special edition of W Magazine as the leader of the list of actors who became the best at the end of the year turned out to be timely.
Affleck produced the 2019 love drama The World to Come. The actor played one of the main roles in the film. Another film in the artist’s repertoire, “Friends Forever,” was created based on real events described in an article in a glossy magazine.
Personal life:
In 2006, Affleck, after a long affair, married actress and model Summer Phoenix, who is the sister of Joaquin Phoenix and River Phoenix. The wife gave Casey two sons – Indian August was born in 2004, Atticus – in 2008. In March 2016, it was announced that the couple had filed for divorce due to “loss of trust.” The divorce procedure lasted a year, and even the help of a family psychologist did not help prevent the separation.
The popular actor was not single for long. Photos of Affleck with his new girlfriend, 33-year-old actress Floriana Lima, began to appear in glossy publications and magazines. The couple’s relationship did not lead to a serious ending: the lovers broke up.
Scandals:
The media claimed that the reason for the collapse of his personal life could well have been the scandal that erupted around Casey. The actor was accused of alleged sexual harassment by two women – a photography director and a producer of the documentary I’m Still Here, which Casey directed.
Both cases were closed by agreement of the parties – after allegations of harassment of women were received, negotiations took place behind closed doors. The parties to the conflict came to an agreement, as a result of which all charges were withdrawn, and the women were paid a certain amount of money.
The issue has long been closed, but the press continued to discuss this topic, because the case, which was not brought to court, left the public perplexed. Many would like to know whether the actor is guilty or whether the voiced harassment is just empty accusations.
In 2018, Affleck was traditionally invited to the Oscars ceremony as a celebrity who introduces the name of the award winner to the public. But after a petition was published on the Internet demanding that he not be allowed to attend the celebration, Casey refused to participate.
Politics and activism:
Even as a young man, Casey became an ardent advocate for animal rights. He is now collaborating with international organizations on this issue. Casey Affleck has been following a vegan diet since 1995. Refusal from eating meat helps the actor maintain impeccable external shape. With a height of 175 cm, his weight does not exceed 69 kg.
The actor is sure that every person should give up meat products at least for a day a week. In his opinion, in this way it is possible to reduce the number of animals intended for slaughter. Casey himself remains a great lover of nature: at various times cats, dogs, turtles and even snakes lived in his house.
But it’s not just animal protection that worries the Hollywood star. Affleck calls his idol Rosa Parks, a political activist who was one of the first to raise the issue of civil rights for African Americans. The artist posted her photo on his Instagram page.
The actor supports the Annual National Games for Disabled Veterans and also takes part in the Veterans Awards ceremony. Together with his mother, he founded a fundraising project called “Stories of Tomorrow.” Society is committed to supporting access to education and nutrition for the world’s children.
